What are the skin benefits of niacinamide?

Never heard of niacinamide? It's time that you do, because this ingredient is one of the true skincare greats!

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide (aka vitamin B3) is the ultimate multitasker. But before I go into all the greatness, I will quickly explain our skin's barrier.

Our skin -in normal conditions- will keep moisture and oils locked in and aggressors (such as irritants, pollution...) out. The skin looks calm, clear, balanced and isn't sensitive. But our skin barrier will weaken due to aging, sun, hormones, usage of harsh chemicals... That's why sometimes we need a helping hand - that's where niacinamide comes in. Niacinamide will stimulate the production of ceramides, one of the building blocks of our skin barrier. But it's water-soluble, meaning our body can't store this vitamin, that's why we have to make sure we have our daily dose!

So what are the skincare benefits of niacinamide?

Be prepared, this list will leave you with mouths wide open. Like I said, niacinamide is the ultimate multitasker! Check it out!

  • will boost your skin's hydration level
  • protects from free radicals (from pollution...) that cause skin care damage
  • is anti-inflammatory, so it soothes redness
  • fades hyperpigmentation, age spots etc
  • regulates oil production
  • improves elasticity
  • fades scars, such as acne scars
  • decreases fine lines & wrinkles
  • boosts collagen production, keeps the skin young

Impressive, right?

niacinamide can i use on sensitive skin

When do I start using niacinamide?

I would recommend using niacinamide around your 25th birthday. If you have acne or skin with a lot of blemishes, you can use it before!

I have sensitive skin, can I still use niacinamide?

Well, the story gets even better because everyone can use it. Even the most sensitive skin types. All ages and all skin types can benefit from niacinamide.

For oily/acne sensitive skin: you will love the oil production regulation benefits and it will also help calm down those painful red blemishes

For sensitive skin, it will help you soothe inflammation and keep your skin hydrated.

How do I use niacinamide?

You can use it once or twice a day (morning and evening) & during all the seasons. I will emphasize the usage of it during the winter months - because of central heating, your skin can get dried out. You can use it safely around the eyes too.

It's easy to add niacinamide to your daily skincare routine, because niacinamide is found in all kinds of skincare products, think daycream, serum, cleansers... Serums often have the highest concentration of niacinamide.

Can niacinamide cause sun sensitivity?

No. But there's no reason not to use SPF during the day. So slap on some extra SPF!

Can I use niacinamide with other ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C or salicylic acid?

You have to think your skin is like your diet. Your skin needs more than one healthy product to maintain itself and be the best it can be. Niacinamide can be paired with all kinds of other ingredients, depending on your skin type. Niacinamide can be used safely with all ingredients in your skincare routine.

You can think of niacinamide and retinol as a power duo. They help benefit each other, so they can be safely used together, preferably!

Niacinamide and vitamin C can be (safely) used together too! They won't make one another less effective, on the contrary. They will leave the skin more bright, radiat and smoother looking.

You can use niacinamide with salicylic acid too. No worries! It's safe to use with other AHA & BHA acids too.

How long does it take for niacinamide to work?

Like all skincare products, don't expect major changes right away. It can give some immediate effects, but takes about 8-12 weeks before you will notice it. Go for products containing 5% niacinamide, nothing less. You can use a higher percentage, but keep in mind they can be irritating (like all ingredients used in high dosage).

What are the best niacinamide products?
